Hamburg Süd: Abstract infrastructure illustration for the Hamburg Süd engagement

Situation

SharePoint 2010, SQL queries, crawling and the existing PKI needed analysis and optimisation so that collaboration and certificate deployment worked together reliably.

Constraints

  • Changes within an already established IT environment
  • Short, clearly scoped engagement
  • Internal system and operating details remain confidential

My scope of responsibility

I set up SharePoint 2010, worked on crawling and SQL topics, reviewed the PKI and configured CRL distribution and web deployment of certificates.

  • I optimised SQL queries and analysed crawling problems.

Documented scope of work

Key decisions

Work through application, database and certificate topics along their technical dependencies. SharePoint functionality, search and secure deployment cannot be optimised sustainably if SQL and PKI are considered separately.

  1. I installed and configured SharePoint Server 2010 with web applications and services.
  2. I reviewed the PKI, configured CRL distribution points and automated certificate deployment.

Lesson from the engagement

Platform problems often lie at the transitions between application, database and trust infrastructure rather than in a single component.

Confidentiality note: Internal architecture and operating data of this engagement are not published.
