Endpoint Management
BGW: Abstract endpoint modernisation with software packages, distribution rings and Windows 11 devices

Situation

BGW's endpoint estate has to be modernised while enterprise operations continue. Windows 11, applications and security updates cannot be treated as separate projects, because collections, distribution, maintenance windows, compliance and support depend directly on one another.

Constraints

  • Modernisation within a live enterprise environment
  • Dependencies between applications, target groups, distribution and maintenance windows
  • Confidential operational and architecture details remain with the client

My scope of responsibility

Since January 2025 I have been responsible, as a freelance MECM/SCCM Expert, for operational and conceptual work across deployment, application delivery, patch management and troubleshooting. My brief is to prepare technical changes so that they stay repeatable and operations can carry them forward without coming back with questions.

  • I analyse and maintain task sequences, application models, collections and content distribution for Windows 11 deployment.
  • I take software packages from the technical model through distribution to delivery to the intended target groups.
  • I review maintenance windows, update distribution and compliance views in the patch management process.

Documented scope of work

Key decisions

Treat deployment, software distribution and patching as one operating model. Optimising them separately often just moves errors between collections, content distribution, maintenance windows and compliance reporting.

Support recurring analysis and administrative steps with PowerShell. Fixed routines reduce manual variation and make fault analysis reproducible.

  1. Native MECM tooling and PowerShell support reproducible fault analysis and recurring administration.

Technology in use

MECM / SCCM

Task sequences, application models, collections and content distribution are analysed and maintained in day-to-day endpoint operations.

Windows 11

Windows 11 deployment is supported within the existing MECM processes.

PowerShell

PowerShell supports recurring administration and reproducible troubleshooting.

Software Distribution

Application models and distribution workflows are supported technically through to the intended target group.

Patch Management

Maintenance windows, update distribution and compliance views are reviewed in the patch process.

Evidence and limits

Windows 11 deployment, software distribution and patch management run as one connected, documented endpoint process rather than as separate initiatives.

Operations and support can classify changes and fault patterns on their own using documented diagnostic paths.

Lesson from the engagement

Optimising deployment, applications, patching and support separately only shifts the errors — they belong together from the technical design onwards.
