Joh. Berenberg Gossler: Abstract infrastructure illustration for the Joh. Berenberg Gossler engagement

Situation

Existing batch automation was to be modernised to PowerShell 3.0 so that server installations and administrative workflows became easier to maintain and control.

Constraints

  • Changes within an already established IT environment
  • Short, clearly scoped engagement
  • Internal system and operating details remain confidential

My scope of responsibility

I introduced PowerShell 3.0, migrated the existing script and guided the internal team in migrating and installing servers with PowerShell.

  • I analysed the existing batch workflow and migrated it to PowerShell 3.0.
  • I structured commands and functions for repeatable server migrations and installations.
  • I taught the internal team the working approach, error handling and productive use of the scripts.

Documented scope of work

Key decisions

Restructure the workflow as traceable PowerShell automation instead of merely transferring the syntax. A line-by-line migration would have preserved the limits of the batch script instead of improving maintainability and reuse.

  1. I analysed the existing batch workflow and migrated it to PowerShell 3.0.
  2. I structured commands and functions for repeatable server migrations and installations.
  3. I taught the internal team the working approach, error handling and productive use of the scripts.

Lesson from the engagement

Script migration only creates value when operational knowledge and ownership are handed over along with the code.
